Amsterdam and Helsinki have launched open records to show the public how they’re using AI algorithms.

The AI registers, believed to be the first in the world, are intended to make the cities more transparent about their chatbots, intelligence management systems, and other algorithmic tools.

Finnish company Saidot developed the registers, which include applications related to Helsinki’s chatbots and an automated library collection management system. Amsterdam’s covers an algorithm related to illegal vacation rentals, a tool to analyze public space reports, and an automated parking control system.

They include an overview of the systems, their data, operating logic, and information about how they’re governed.

They plan to add more applications this year. AI registers could become more common as governments feel the pressure to open up about their AI systems and make them more accountable and transparent.
